This week’s question might push a few buttons with people. So please remember that all of these questions are meant to push and pull ideas. To paraphrase Scott Cunningham there is no right or wrong way to do things, it is important that it feels right for you. That is the same with the answers to these questions each person’s answer might be very different from the next.

Last week we talked a bit about reincarnation and the thinnest veil.  The week before that the topic was assisted suicide and the right to decide how we die in the same way that we got to decide how we lived. This week is the last in the series of questions about death where we take a look at the biggest death of the season. Our God sacrifices himself so that we might be able to have a successful growing season the following year. His body nurtures the soil itself and replenishes it to grow our next crop in.

With so much of the attention of the holiday turned towards Trick or Treating, the thinnest veil, and the coming of the New Year do we as Pagans maybe short change his sacrifice? Assuming you feel that you don’t short change it then how do you honour it? Look back at this past Samhain just a few days ago what you did for it then? Was there any aspect of it that acknowledged his sacrifice? Of course over the years we might celebrate differently from time to time. But would something like this still be acknowledged? If the ritual wasn’t focused on the sacrifice, did you do something afterwards to acknowledge it separately? Are you planning on doing something in the near future?

At the end of the holiday how you celebrated isn’t has important as the fact that you did celebrate. So assuming that you feel comfortable sharing and are not bound by an oath of secrecy then let us know how you celebrate Samhain.

As always looking forward to reading everyone’s answers.

  1. Well, I may observe the wheel lore a bit differently than some, but I tend to view the harvest season as a whole as pertaining to the time of the God’s sacrifice. I tend to work with that idea more at Lammas, sometimes at Mabon, while Samhain is focused on other aspects of harvest.

Good question this week for sure, I may have to give this some more thought.
